Later, a temporary harness around his back, he followed the McDonough up to the surface. The slow, awkward vessel seemed nothing more than a segment of byway with fins. It had its own defenses, but they were half measures, hopeless in the new ocean, like everything else human.

They’d call the day’s rescue a victory.

The encounter with the beast shook Adair, not only in the literal sense. He realized it had cut the hole, then waited for its preferred prey, the eelmare, to appear. It had preferred prey. A whole new ecosystem was emerging. Even if the malea was stopped, what chance was there? With these new beasts prospering, would Eee matter?

They neared the surface. Golden rays struck through the water and shimmered against the McDonough’s hold. He heard the humans inside, talking and laughing, barking orders to one another in their slow, languid speech.

Happy. Shut away, if only for a moment, from the unstoppable waves.
